7 Reasons Not To Wear Makeup

In a world bombarded by mascara advertisements and bafflingly popular YouTube eyeshadow tutorials, it’s not hard to see how huge the cosmetics industry has become. Many women consider make-up an ‘essential’ part of their lives, but the fact of the matter is that it definitely isn’t. You can give it up.

This article is not a feminist rant about how women should stop aspiring to the unrealistic beauty standards set by the media and Hollywood (although that would be great, too). Nor is it a judgment or criticism of women who use cosmetics. This article is just here to provide some totally logical reasons not to paint your already beautiful face with make-up.

  1. Make-up is expensive

There’s no denying it, applying a full face of make-up, including touch ups on a daily basis is mega expensive. This study reveals that the average woman spends $15,000 on makeup in her lifetime. You could buy a new car, put a down payment on a studio apartment, or take a lavish trip around Europe with that kind of cash!

  1. Putting on makeup is time-consuming

Applying makeup steals precious minutes from your day. Minutes that could be spent doing other things. A coat of lip gloss and a bit of mascara is harmless, but applying a full face can really drain your time, especially if you take regular trips to the bathroom for touch-ups. The same study quoted above found that the average woman spends 20 minutes applying make-up each day. Added up over one year, that’s 121 hours! You could almost become fluent in another language with that time.

  1. It’s not good for your skin

Nobody likes leaving the house with giant zits on their face, but covering up blemishes with products containing chemicals is really counterintuitive. Your skin will not recover as fast as it should if you don’t let it breathe and heal naturally. After giving up make-up you’ll even find that your skin becomes less prone to irritation – you just need to break the cycle. Yes, there are organic, ‘natural-ingredients-only’ cosmetics available, but let’s be honest, not many people can afford to use this stuff exclusively (see reason 1).

  1. You should be able to feel comfortable with your natural face

This is a hard one, because simply ‘becoming okay’ with the way you look is a long-term process, particularly if you suffer from major body image hang-ups. However, it has to be acknowledged that if you’re embarrassed about your natural face, you have some issues to address. In a study polling 2,000 women, one in five said they would refuse to answer a knock on their door if they had no make-up on. That is worrying. If you can’t walk to your corner store or go to the beach without a full face of makeup, this may also apply to you. Try walking down your street without make-up. You’ll notice that nothing bad happens and nobody will care. Which brings us to our next point…

  1. Other people don’t care about or notice your make-up

It’s amazing that many (not all) women wear make-up to appear more attractive to the opposite sex, yet it’s difficult to find a man who prefers his partner in make-up. On a similar note, it’s probably even more difficult to find a fellow woman who thinks your face looks better coated in make-up. The point is this: nobody actually cares or notices if you’re wearing make-up or not, so why bother? In most cases, other people will even PREFER how you look without it. This doesn’t just apply to people you’re attracted to – the person interviewing you for a job doesn’t care, your family doesn’t care, the bus driver doesn’t care, and your friends certainly don’t care either.

  1. You won’t have to worry about stains

If you don’t wear makeup you’ll never have to fear make-up stains ruining your clothes again. Your white t-shirts will rejoice! You also won’t have to worry about staining your face when you cry or simply need to rub your itchy eye.

  1. You’re hot already

There is no need to wear make-up because you already look great! Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool who doesn’t deserve your time. Leave the house wearing a natural glow of confidence on your face instead and see how good it feels.
